Erasmus Policy Statement

The Escuela superior de Diseño de La Rioja (ESDIR) observes as one of its main aims the strengthening of its international dimension, which will deeply contribute to a modernization of the institution. In that sense, its participation in the Erasmus Programme is an essential part of the internationalization strategy of the institution that affects all its members and that has an impact on the improvement of academic practice, innovation and visibility of the institution in different dimensions.
Successful previous experience in Erasmus programmes has allowed ESDIR to test the positive repercussion of this type of projects, not only from the individual perspective of the participants in their improvement and acquisition of skills, but also in multiple other aspects for the institution, such as the development of new methodologies or visibility abroad. Hence, participation in the Erasmus Programme as part of its internationalization strategy will contribute to the improvement of education and innovation at ESDIR.
In this sense, the aim of participating in the Erasmus Programme intends to achieve several goals of ESDIR internationalization strategy, namely, high quality mobility, consolidation and improvement of our interinstitutional networks and promotion and visibility of the institution in an international context.
Carrying out quantitatively and qualitatively relevant mobility remains one of the main internationalization strategy aims of the institution. It will require further and better promotion of the programme with the help of initiatives such as the Erasmus Student Card, as well as to continue applying automatic recognition and to expand the agreements network. ESDIR is interested in fostering mobility in order to attract talent, promote research and provide opportunities for staff and students development. The adherence to the ECHE principles provides a reliable framework for recognition and development of such activities.
Regarding students, the main goal is to encourage participation in Erasmus mobility programmes with programme and partner countries both for studies and internships with the aim to develop their skills and to provide them with the best possible education opportunities. Also, we also consider attracting talent of skilled interested students regardless their socioeconomic background. Concerning teaching staff, by means of the participation of teachers in mobility programs, we aim to foster teaching improvement. Knowing other international institutions and other ways of understanding design pedagogy will contribute to improve their teaching practice, academic cooperation and knowledge transfer. This will have also an obvious impact on our students, who will receive the results of such improved practice. The rest of staff will be able to exchange experiences and benefit from good practices. At the same time, the presence of teachers and designers in the institution will allow staff to increase their knowledge, develop skills and improve their methodologies. Finally, the reception of students for mobilities and internships also provides opportunities of internationalization at home.
On the other hand, since internationalization goes beyond mobility, by means of participating in the Erasmus Programme, ESDIR will also have opportunities of extending its interinstitutional network. The aim is to build strategic partnerships in education to promote innovation and research. It will be done both by strengthening the cooperation with partner institutions and at the same time, promoting diversification of countries and contexts as part of the internationalization strategy. Up to now, ESDIR counts on a solid network of higher education institutions both from programme and partner countries, which provide our students and staff stimulating mobility opportunities. The growing demand of participants entails a further search of interesting, qualified and compatible institutions. In all this process, we will continue with our monitoring policy in order to assure the commitment of our partners in all our agreement terms and principles.
More than ever, it is necessary to participate in cooperation programmes, international and interdisciplinary projects that allow the contact with other complementary institutions and that position our students and staff in an international framework. The Erasmus Programme will provide chances of doing so.
Regarding visibility, participation in the Erasmus programme will definitely improve the visibility and prestige of ESDIR at local, regional, national and international levels. This will help to achieve our aim of increasing our competitiveness as higher education institution in a globalized context.
Furthermore, all these objectives and the activities they entail also participate in the common goal of building a European Education area. Undoubtedly, mobility will help to normalize the experience of studying and learning abroad, emphasizing the importance and use of ECTs credits and recognition.
Also, offering participants from all backgrounds fair and non-discriminatory criteria access to the programme will provide access to high-quality education regardless of the background. The international exchange will urge to overcome cultural and language barriers raising awareness of European identity and diversity. Finally, and in compliance with other aims of the institution, the study and use of English and other languages, fostering the development of digital skills and the implementation of environmentally friendly measurements will be encouraged.
ESDIR considers that participation in the Erasmus Programme will definitely contribute to the modernization of the institution and its dynamization at several levels. Contact with other ways of thinking in other parts of the world will increase innovation and modernization, as well as education quality improvement.
